British Extends Methanol Toxicity Warning Roster with An additional 11 Countries
The UK government has placed an additional eleven further nations to its travel advisory roster concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated spirits.
The expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.
Only last month, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, in response to several notable incidents such as the tragic demise of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within 12–48 hours.

Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol often employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not intended for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.
But in various destinations, it is clandestinely blended into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Government official the minister stated that all travellers should know the signs of toxic alcohol contamination.
"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister warned.
"In case something seems unusual, for example a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."
