This thanksgiving celebration is celebrated by the Oromo people, the predominant community, and occurs at the end of the country's main rainy season.

Each year, participants assemble around revered natural water sources to show appreciation to their creators for the greenery that the precipitation have delivered.

"I have participated in the festival for the last nine years," stated 25-year-old a participant.

"In my view, Irreecha embodies my identity, it reflects the pride and significance of my community."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Men, females, the elderly and the younger generation all participate, decorated in striking attire and jewellery.

They sing, perform traditional dances, share stories and deposit freshly cut green plants and flowers in the water - representing life, regeneration and hope.

International visitors at festival

Irreecha brings in individuals from throughout the country, guests travel from globally.

"I visited a year ago - it was wonderful, so beautiful, I invited my kids with me currently," mentioned Claire, originating from abroad.

"It's incredible. Everybody greets you, each person wants to give you a kiss and says welcome."

The initial day of the event took place on the weekend in Addis Ababa. On the next day, participants travelled to Bishoftu, a community near the main city.

While this celebration has its origins in indigenous faith systems, it is now practiced by the bulk of the Oromo people, irrespective of their faith.
