Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
